What did you think of CT9?

  1. Hi

Has anyone taken CT9? What did you think? Was it interesting?

I am taking it in May - is anyone else taking it then? :)

    Hi,

I found out today that I will be doing the BAM on 3/4th May...not long to read the modules I thought we were to get 2 months?!

In any case I wont be looking at anything until CT1 is over!

    Bam

I didn't find the content that interesting. Liked socialising with everyone else and sleeping over and being able to discuss actuarial matters with actuarial people. Bit like this forum really...

  4. I have spent the day reading the pre-course material and watching the strange video clips (is it just me, or are they a bit odd?). How much of the course do you need to remember to pass the test? For example, should I be making notes on these videos or just watching them?

  5. Another quick question... what do people wear for BAM?

    I assume it's casual?

    Smart casual apparently.

i agree it's a bit difficult to know qutie how much detail to study the course material. I've looked at about half of the pre course material so far (I'm also on the 3rd/4th May course). But how much of the questions we should actually answer properly - or whether we should just consider them is a bit uncertain.

I think the animations etc are actually quite helpful once you get used to them - though it is tempting to get distracted by them and not listen properly to the voiceover!

  8. Greg, are you printing out and filling in the word document at the end of each section?

    I havent as yet.

I have a study day tomorrow though so I probably will. Spoke to someone else at our firm who did it last time though and he said you dont need to prepare too many answesr in writing or anytrhing. Better jsut to make sure youve read eveeything, understood it all and have "considered" all the questions, templates etc. Worth looking at the game stuff in more detail possibly just so fully familiar with it when we're there.

Sounds like it could actually be quite fun...(shoot me now for saying that!)

    I'll see you Tuesday. :)

on 2nd thoughts I may not fill out all the word template forms. I'm going through it all now and the things is most of the word documents need to be filled out in "specific situations", eg the business chain in "your business", the business chain in that business. etc etc. I will probably print all the forms out and consider the questions and I imagine they will be very helpful on the course itself. But it wouldnt appear (at least from my reading) that we would be expected to have actually filled them out. This is just what I think though...I could be wrong!

The business game briefing paper is the one thing that it looks like should be studied in more detail before Tuesday. As well as all the animations and other info (which I'm finding take a surprisingly long time to actually go through fully...)

  11. Ok, thanks for your thoughts Greg :)

I'm quite looking forward to it  Better than 2 days at work :p

Yeah I'm quite looking forward to it too now,

The business game could be quite fun actually. I already have ideas what i reckon the company should do....:p

See you Wednesday. You'll recognise me as being (probably the only) one called Greg!

    No need to take notes

Hi chaps. Just stumbled across the ActEd forum. I had my CT9 course late last year. Preparing for the day itself doesn't need to involve more than just watching the videos. There's no need to bother with all those Word Templates.
As with regard to the internet-based test I would just give it a go without any preparation. Worked fine for me. When I did it, we could attempt it as often as we liked. All of the questions are multiple choice and fairly common sense. You are allowed to use the notes while doing the test. But you don't really need to write anything down during the two days as all the "important" stuff is in the hand-outs anyhow.
The most important part about those two days is just to have fun. This can be made slightly more difficult by some of the activities (e.g. professionalism session) but most of it is alright.

    Thanks Cosmo - much appreciated!

  15. Thanks Cosmo! One quick question... what were the females wearing? I know it's "smart casual" but what does that mean!?

I thought you only had 4 attempts? Am I wrong?

  18. I found this in the FAQ http://www.actuaries.org.uk/Display_Page.cgi?url=/students/qa_ba.html.

However the FAQ was written following a meeting in 2004 and the quote in the post above was written in August 2005, so I think that is more likely to be up to date.
