When going through X3 recently I was a bit confused. Questions 8 and 9 ask you to calculate the scaled deviance and the deviance respectively, but in both cases the solutions gave the scaled deviance. In my mind these are different quantities. How are we supposed to know which one they are asking for??
Hi Sharon, You are right in saying that the scaled deviance & deviance are two different quantities. The Deviance = scale parameter * scaled deviance. The distributions of questions 8 and 9 are Exponential and Poisson respectively and the scale parameter for both distributions is = 1. This is why the solutions gave the scaled deviance since, deviance = scaled deviance. Hope this helps.
