When deriving an MLE, are we required to verify that the derivative of the log-likelihood at the estimator is a maximum?

    Thanks

    Hi

I think it is required. Otherwise how will you argue that the solution is the maximum (particularly in cases where you get more than one solution).

I have a feeling that some marks are set aside for this step and examiners may deduct a mark if you miss the step or don't argue otherwise. Hopefully ActEd tutors can throw some light on this.

I think it says in ASET solutions to an exam that credit is not always given for it but it's probably wise to check and it's always nice to have confirmation that what's you've done makes sense!

Yes (unless it's two variables in which case you're not).

However, the examiners do not always award marks for it - but sometimes they do. So best to take no chances!
