Training in the Workplace

I'd be interested to find out how new graduates starting work as an actuarial student get training in their specific workplace and what the training is like.........This may differ according to:
-type of work
-size of firm

What I'm more curious about is, say after a years work experience, how familiar are you with work techniques and after how long can one work on a project quite independently or with minimal supervision.
