In part (ii) I don’t understand why we don't just estimate parameters by dividing number of transitions from state i to state j by the total waiting time in state i . Help please.
That is what the Examiners report does - it just presents it in a rather complicated way. What you suggest is a more straightforward method to obtain the same answers
