Hi guys, I'm a little confused and anyone is free to answer this one. Bn is supposed to be the largest num. rolled in n outcomes. The trans. prob. for Bn+1 = j given Bn = i is shown as 1/6 in the past paper. I don't get it. For example, suppose after 1 roll, your highest is 1. Wouldn't the prob. of getting a higher number after the second outcome be 6-1/6 = 5/6??

    Help please!

    Thanks.

    Hi JamiacanJem,

Yes the probability that you move away from state i is 5/6, but the probability that you move from State i to (a specific) State j is 1/6. Eg the probability we go from 1 to 4 is 1/6 (we have to roll a 4)

In these questions, try to think about what the probability is actually saying, so in this example...

    prob. for Bn+1 = j given Bn = i

    and NOT

    prob. for Bn+1 <> i given Bn = i

    Good luck!
    John
