Sometimes (in the solutions of the sample projects) fomulae have been used (such as nested if statements or vlookups etc.) when I probably would have just manually linked cells (e.g. in cell A1 I might just have, say, "=R1" rather than a vlookup or if statement). Does this lose marks?

if you link to a data cell and for some reason that cells row is deleted your spreadsheet will generate an error. however if you have used vlookup and named a range, data manipulation will not cause errors. from what i gauge, they want a fully automated sheet with no chance of errors if your main data is altered.
