Force of mortality

Can I just establish what the force of mortality is?

The core reading describes it as the 'annual rate of transfer between alive and dead at exact age x+s, i.e the annual rate at which people are dying at that exact age.'

I am unclear on what this actually means. Is the force of mortality the probability that a life aged x dies instantly (e.g. someone aged 85 dying before they reach age 85.1 etc. They die instantly, on that day).

The word 'annual' throws me off here. Because we already have an annual probability of death, and this would be q_x. This is the probability that a life aged x dies within 1 year.

A numerical example would be really helpful to clarify this.
