   can someone explain the example one page 14 of the chapter, why is the distribution function defined lke that, as zero when theta < max xi?

   THETA is maximum value of the distribution. So all sample values must be less than or equal to THETA [ max xi <= THETA ]. If not then its likelihood is 0.
