Hello everybody,

I am sitting CT8 for the April exams. Have finished reading the first part. I want to know how useful are assignments for CT8. I have heard its the toughest paper of the CT series. Any advice as to how to go about preparing for this paper and having a good chance of passing it in the first attempt??

Thanks,

hiya...i did CT8 (109) and passed it first time....and in my opinion, I think it is reallly really important to do the Q& A and assignments...I think I did those questions 3 times and I did the exam questions twice.

I know the Q&As generally has no resemblance to the exams questions but I found that it established for me a good basic understanding of the course so that when I was given difficult or unusual questions in the exams I kindda had a starting point of how to attempt it.

ultimately, you know how well you take in information, but I am the sort of person who has to practise things over and over again until i become one with it - so for me I make sure I struggle through all the assignments.

I hope its helpful

well, i failed the exam in april, but took it in september (i've just read on another forum on acted that there are discrepancies between april and september, so it makes sense :D ); anyway, second time i paid more attention to the questions - even if u probably won't meet them in the exam they add a lot to real understanding ... (yes, i know we are not supposed to use Q&A as a learning tool, but with CT8 u are never sure u completely got the point :) )

Just one more thing: i found the most difficult chapters to be 8 (it's deadly long!!!) and 12 ( a lot of information there ...); i know the parts are supposed to be uniform, but i would say the rest is much harder.

good luck!

Not quite sure where you got that from. I think Q&As should definitely be used a learning tool. Very few people are lucky enough to be able to understand everything on a first or even second read. Doing examples / questions helps you to understand the principles through active learning.

And given that they can ask anything based on the syllabus then all questions are worth doing.

Well, i'm not sure either :D . I remember only that I've read somewhere in the acted materials that we are supposed to understand the material first and then use the questions as a revision and work-under-pressure tool. Well, whatever, i guess we are all using Q&A, X and Past papers rather to understand the subject than to practise exam conditions :D

Any advice

Does anyone have advice on where to find extra question practice besides question and answer bank and past exam papers. If anyone has ever bought revision notes in this or any other subject I would like to hear if it is useful and value for money, or just repetition of core reading. Furthermore, how useful is the series Y assignments.

Any comments will be welcomed.

Thanks, Erik.

I always buy Y assignments ( and Z for the old 100's) and I generally find them useful. ( If you create enough fuss Acted will probably sell you the old 109 Z assignments as well.)The ST6 notes/bank/Y assignments are also pretty useful for CT8, but ironically not for ST6. In addition I have pulled off past exam papers of websites for University courses eg University of New South Wales, Kent, Herriot Watt, City etc and one of my students gave me a load from the Warwick "Morse" course as well. I never pay for tuition though.

Can you post some links to relevant CT8 papers, as I can't seem to track down any past papers. Cheers.

I find it most useful to write past exam papers under exam conditions after you have completed the course and leaving sufficient time to review wht you have written.

JayKay - You have to be smart about your searches. Most University libraries websites have past papers collated, but they are often passworded.

eg if you could get a password for Warwick the web address is

http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/services/library/electronicresources/exam_papers/

Now I'm sure you know a recent Warwick graduate as so many qualify as actuaries

For Kent the 109 papers were MA524B - try searching under that

I picked loads of papers of the University of New South Wales in 2003. They have recoded the site since then, but it may still be available if you use the searches within the Departmental site.

Obviously Anakin that is the first stop. The point here is that I was asked about extra stuff and website addresses. I have institutes papers going back to the 1980's but there is little history on 109 (CT8) and 103 (half of CT4) and the first exams were set in 2000.

You do however have a talent for stating the patently obvious

Websites (possibly?) useful for 109/CT8 stuff

I had a quick search around tonight and found these sites. The first two are not passworded. The rest are, but I'm sure there are plenty of people out there in actuarial offices with access passwords

Past Exam papers

Aha, found it.

Here is the address of the website.

www.ma.hw.ac.uk/~torsten/FinEcon2/FE2.html

There are some old 109 papers AND REPORTS.
I find it useless to work through old exam papers without having CORRECT solutions.

If you still can't find the website, leave me your e-mail address and I'll mail you all the exam papers.

Cheers
Erik
