Hi In Chapter 3 under "Demographic changes" the following statement is made: The effects of an ageing population are considerable: (5th bullet point) However, the second largest area of expenditure for many governments is education. The cost of educating the population will tend to fall with an ageing population. Why is this the case? I would think that the cost of educating the population will increase with an ageing population? Thanks DC92
Educating and providing information to the public will be relevant to all age groups, wouldn't it? And thats why I argue that the cost of educating the public will increase with an ageing population. The cost of education per capita might decrease with an ageing population, but the actual cost will surely increase?
Hi - Pede is right: the reference to "education" in this bullet point is about the cost of providing schooling for young people. It is simply making the point that in an aged population (low number of young people) this will be a lighter burden on the State than in a young population (high number of young people).
