Are we required to know the proof of:

Var[D_i - mu.V_i] = E[D_i] ?

Is it simply stated on page 16.

you don't need to remember this proof. This won't be coming in the exam and you won't find it in past exam papers either.
Important thing is to understand what this equation realy meant and to use it in required situation.
With solving some question relatd to this equation, you can easily understand.
