    The total fertility rate for 2006 was 1.86.
    How do we know the definition of this rate?
    The table shows the number of live births per 1,000 women, so is this the definition of the total fertility rate for 2006?

    Hi Snowy

    This is a TFR calculated on a period basis (see page 11 of Chapter 14 for a description of the different ways of calculating TFRs).

    I think that the TFR for England and Wales is based on births by women aged 15-44. So if you add up the figures in the table for each age between 15 and 44 you should find it is pretty close to 1.86.
