Central rate of mortality - q or µ ?

Hi, can anyone help me with this please?

To calculate Standard Mortality Ratio, if a question asks to use a standard population from the tables, e.g. ELT15, should the central rate of mortality be taken as qx or µx?

I am sure someone (can't recall whether ActEd tutor or uni lecturer) said the central mortality rates should be taken as µ but the solutions to April 2008 use qx...Can someone clarify this for me please?

More of an CT4 type question

Initial rate - q
Central rate - m (q and mu are much more common)
(Central) Force of mortality - mu

mu and m are used with central exposed to risk
q is used with initial exposed to risk

Only question in April 2008 with ELT is #9. It provided initial exposed to risk and asks you to calculate expected deaths, so q rates are what you need.

Thanks didster, that was really helpful. I didn't pick up on the Initial Exposed to Risk...
