Calculation questions

Question 4.15 of the Q&A bank is an 'exam style' question that involves quite a complicated calculation relating to a policy alteration. How often do these CT5 style calculation questions come up in ST2 and are they usually more straightforward than this particular question?

My memory of CT5 actuarial notation is a bit sketchy so I'm finding this question pretty heavy going!

I would also like to know what topics in the course could potentially have calculation questions on the exam? Thanks.

A numerical question does not come up in every ST2 exam. However, a good knowledge of the basics of CT5 is important assumed knowledge for ST2, so well worth practising if you are a bit rusty.

Q&A bank 4.15 is rather long and complex. However, all the ideas within that question are examinable (but probably not all at once).

Some examples of numerical calculations in ST2 include:

Sept 2016 Q5 - with-profit annuity calculations
April 2016 Q5 - calculations of simple, compound and super-compound bonuses
Sept 2015 Q2 - calculation of profit on term assurances
April 2014 Q2 - calculation of embedded value and solvency ratio
April 2013 Q1 - calculation of contribution method dividend
Sept 2010 Q1 - calculating unit prices
Sept 2010 Q6 - asset share calculations
April 2005 Q3 - mortality option calculation

Sometimes questions don't require a calculation, but you need to write down a formula using the actuarial notation from CT5, eg

Sept 2012 Q6(i)

Good luck with your studies
