Tutorials For Overseas Students

Overview

If you are looking for some tuition to help you pass the exams then we recommend one (or more) of the following options:

  • Online Classroom - The Online Classroom is equivalent to a typical face-to-face tutorial run in the UK. Being online, it's an excellent choice for students without easy access to face-to-face classes.
  • Live Online Tutorials - Live Online Regular or Block Tutorials are ideal if you like the discipline and motivation of a structured and timetabled course but are unable to travel to one of our face-toface courses. We aim to replicate as closely as possible what you would experience on a face-to-face tutorial - but deliver it online.
  • Block Tutorials - if you are able to visit the UK for a few days then we recommend a Block Tutorial held between 3 and 8 weeks before the exams. View our Tuition Bulletin to see what's on offer.

Students on a low income who pay for their own tuition may be eligible for reduced prices. Please visit our reduced-rate page for more details.

Revision materials for students studying the F100 series exams

Students who are studying for the F100 series may consider using the UK revision materials that are available for the equivalent UK SP series subjects. However, please read the following guidance, in conjunction with that given in the F100 series Study Guide.

F101

You can use Subject SP1 revision materials, however these include the Income Protection insurance product which is not covered in Subject F101. The revision materials for Subject SP1 are always based on the latest Core Reading from the UK Institute and Faculty of Actuaries. The material for Subject F101 is based on Core Reading for its predecessor, Subject ST1, that is now a few years old and so there will be some differences in the content of the courses.

There is also additional material in Subject F101 not covered in Subject SP1. In particular Chapter 10 (Risk adjustment), Chapter 18 (Generalised linear modelling) and Chapter 27 (Managed Care) are not covered in Subject SP1.

F102

Subject F102 contains largely the same material as the UK Subject SP2 (which covers insurance products contingent on human life). Subject F102 also contains some material covered by the UK Subject SP1 (which covers insurance products contingent on human health). The revision products for the UK Subject SP2 would give good coverage of the Subject F102 syllabus for insurance products contingent on human life.

F103

Subjects SP7 and SP8 in the UK are, when combined, broadly equivalent to Subject F103. Therefore you should find the revision products for Subjects SP7 and SP8 useful. Bear in mind however that while there is a close correspondence between the South African and UK course material, Subjects SP7 and SP8 tend to go into more depth than F103 particularly for the more technical content, and at times they also refer to UK-specific issues.

F104

Subject F104 is not based directly on Subject SP4 and so our Subject SP4 revision materials are unlikely to be suitable for Subject F104.

F105

You can use Subject SP5 revision materials to help you prepare for the Subject F105 exam, however there are some differences in the courses. In particular there is material in Subject F105 that is not in Subject SP5. For example, Subject F105 contains additional material on:

  • corporate finance and mergers and acquisitions (in Chapter 7 of the Course Notes)
  • trust law (in Chapter 9)
  • the roles and responsibilities of directors (in Chapter 10)
  • South African equity and bond indices (in Chapter 15)
  • asset-liability modelling and risk-free returns (in Chapter 18).

In addition, the whole of the Subject F105 Course Notes (whether ActEd supplementary text or Core Reading) is examinable. Only Core Reading is examinable in the exams of the (UK) Institute and Faculty of Actuaries.
