What does an actuary do?

    This is a question that sometimes haunts me when people ask me who's an actuary, what does he do, what kind of work?

    What's the best explanation of actuarial job that you have come across yet? Any other thoughts are also appreciated.

    I prefer saying "I can't tell you or I'd have to kill you." ;)

    But more seriously I say "I work out how long you've got to live...."
