    Hi,

Please can anyone hep me derive the formula used to work out force of mortality mu x given in the table ELT 15 from year 1 onwards.

    Thanks,
    Mahesh.

    Is your question really why is \(e^{-\mu}\neq 1 - p_x\) in ELT15?

The answer to that is that the values of \(\mu\) given are those that apply instantaneously at age (x) exactly. The value of \(\mu\) that gives \(p_x\) is the average value of \(\mu\) between (x) and (x+1).

You can't derive the values exactly as they arise from the underlying data. Averaging \(\mu\) for (x) and (x+1) will get you close, though.

Just to add that the way in which the value of mu is obtained from underlying mortality data is covered in CT4.
