  1. Dear all,
What do you think the drop out rate is for those joining the profession?
    I reckon it is 50%.

Is the drop out rate higher for women than men??
    I think so..

    How about you

I agree it is very high as you suggest.

Why don't you ask the IFoA rather than speculate?

Maybe you can ask them in your email you were going to send... thanks

Perhaps the new 2019 exams with fewer subjects will accelerate time to get through the exams. Guess the article is more useful than guessing but may be a little out of date.

Proud, some of them have become double exams...

  10. If our profession had a 50% dropout rate, do yoy think they would admit it??

Well that article from 2002 as almost_there raised suggests a greater than 50% drop out rate. The Actuary magazine is linked to the IFoA I believe.

Admittedly the rate could have changed recently. With fewer subjects under 2019 exam changes retention rate may increase.

You able to shed any light on the outcome of the judgment Whistleblower? Almost_there is reluctant to comment for some strange reason.

  12. Dont worry mate... you will find out in due course.

Very odd - almost as if the ruling wasn't as significant as you'd hoped.

What is the explanation for a 50% dropout rate, Proud?

I mean Actuary consistently rates well for satisfaction/salary: https://www.theactuary.com/news/2019/05/actuaries-in-the-top-10-best-careers/ so perhaps a lot of people are attracted.

May well then be that the difficulty of the exams means some people are unable to pass them and decide to move on elsewhere. Or some people decide that they don't like the job and decide to move on to pastures new.

Maybe some take advantage of the MRAs to move elsewhere and give up IFoA status.

What do you think the reason is?

  16. Maybe some went off to have kids and couldn't be bothered to take further exams. Some might have been harassed out.

Why do you say "maybe", that's not how actuaries tend to be, they prefer to get the data before commenting. Add the MRA stats to your email to IFoA then get back to us.

Read the thread. Whistleblower asked a question, I responded. The use of maybe was to show that it was an opinion. Better to be clear than laud opinion as fact as some other posters do...

Mr Clifford Friend said it was 10% in front of a judge yesterday

It’s funny how data scientists rank and earn above actuary. They don’t need a qualification

Still a pretty decent ranking though! :)
