    This question is on day 5 tutorial handout.
    just wondering why isn't it simply (aq)40 = 1-(1-1/70)*e^-0.03 ==> then workout (aq)s40^beta?

    I assume here you are looking to use the multiple decrements formula from the course eg mu_40(beta) / (mu_40(alpha) + mu_40(beta)) * aq(40)?

    To be able to use this formula you need your decrements to be constant over each year of age. However, in this case the force of decrement for alpha is constantly changing as the life ages. Therefore, we need an integral approach approach.

    If I have misunderstood your approach please let me know.
