Notation

    I have a very basic question about the notation: is there are reason the notes write E[X] instead of E(X)? I appreciate that square brackets and round brackets make a difference for intervals (a square bracket indicates that the endpoint is included in the set and a round bracket that it is not), but what is the difference for functions?

    In the Standard Keyboard Notation, I didn't find a notation for "not equal to". Is it OK to use "<>" in the exam?
