Which ST to combine with ST6?

    Hi all,

I need advice as to which ST to combine with ST6? I was thinking about ST8 (GI), as this is the area closest to my current line of work (Retail Credit Risk Modeling).

I chose ST6 out of my interest in Derivatives and Risk Management, but now it feels I need to have one ST as well, which is closer to my current professional experience (most of the ST6 stuff is part of my job).

However, can it create issues at the Specialists Application stage if I choose ST6 and ST8? What other options do I have. I know that ST9 could be a good combination as well, but at SA level we do not have any paper purely for risk. Can I sit for SA3.

    Appreciate your suggestions.

    Thanks

I have ST6, I am doing ST9 and then will read ST5 and sit SA6. I go for what's immediately interesting to me, ends up being easier.

I wish I could do that! IAI won't allow me to write ST9 in the US and since I have one ST cleared from India, I have to have the other too - so registering with IOA won't help. Planning to come back to India next May to write CA1 and ST5 (which thankfully happens in the same month).

I am still wondering whether ST8 and 6 is a good combination or not. In India, not too sure specialization in finance from actuaries can help in landing up in an actuarial finance kind of job, whereas market for GI is still evolving.

Further, what application to take at SA level is another question. I have heard that it requires industry experience to clear exams at that level. So how tough it might be for someone outside the finance industry to clear SA6.

The UK SA6 has appalling pass rates even from those in the industry...

Don't worry too much about the relevance of the exam you choose. You can adapt once qualified. Choose what interests you and what you might find easiest (if that's possible to know).

To do SA3, you most definitely need to have studied (but not necessarily passed) ST7 and ST8. ST7 is perhaps more appropriate to risk management than ST8 in my opinion (as it covers capital modelling).

I've heard that SA5 is the one to go for if you don't have direct industry experience anywhere suitable...
